I first established Brimstones in 1990, as a (fairly) traditional general second-hand bookshop, sited in central Brighton, Sussex, and traded there for the next ten years.
By 2000, the growth of book-buying and bookselling resources on the Internet had made possible the move to a large Sussex barn converted to warehouse and office, and later to purpose-built facilities at my home, peacefully tucked away in the countryside outside Lewes.
I am now a postal-only seller - officially so, as our planning consent specifically precludes retail business - so please don't try to call in and browse the shelves...
My stock covers a wide range of subjects, and all categories from paperback reading copies to antiquarian rarities. The stock is general, with lots of 20th Century fiction, and non-fiction concentrated in the braod spectrum of biography / history / politics / social science / philosophy / theology, and aimed at appealing equally to the general reader or the academic.
I do describe all books as accurately as I am able, and do try to list all significant faults or damage. I do use some abbreviations (for example, VG for very good), and I do use the commonly accepted standard grades for condition - Good / Very Good / Fine etc. I try to be conservative in my gradings, as I'd rather lose a sale than have a disappointed customer.
I try always to note inscriptions, bookplates etc, but may - especially if the book is graded Good - not consider slight browning, corner bumping, previous owner's names etc. serious enough to mention.+++ if in doubt, please do ask before you order.
